With Design Days Dubai, the 2014 edition just round the corner, Cyril Zammit, Fair Director talks to Design Carrot about what we can expect from the show, come March.
From 17th to 21st March, the very best of collectible, limited edition, even rare design pieces will be on show at Design Days Dubai. in Downtown Dubai. Presenting design from leading and upcoming international designers and galleries alongside a strong programme of workshops, installations and live performances, Design Days Dubai promises something for every design lover.
Design Carrot (DC): What was the intent behind the creating a design show of such caliber as Design Days Dubai?
Cyril Zammit (CZ): Design Days Dubai was born out of the natural development of the city as a hub for innovative, modern design – Ben Floyd of Art Dubai came to me with the idea to launch an annual modern and contemporary design fair that was at a global standard of quality, and also compelling for collectors. We are now the most diverse modern and contemporary design fair in the world; with 35 galleries from 21 countries worldwide participating.
DC: Into its third year now, how do you feel the show has fared?
CZ: The fair is now regarded in the same league as the well-established European and North American fairs, which as we’re only in our 3rd edition is a great signifier of the quality of the investment pieces – we also have seen strong sales figures which is reflected in the high return rate of galleries exhibiting; especially the market leaders Carpenters Workshop Gallery, Southern Guild, _Croft, Industry Gallery and Victor Hunt.  For the 2014 edition we have grown the number of exhibiting galleries by 20%. We also became the first design fair with a majority of design galleries showcasing contemporary design.
“Our reach into new regions has been fantastic; we now have design galleries from Algeria, Japan, Jordan, China, Austria, Portugal, and Pakistan all exhibiting at Design Days Dubai for the first time”
“We’re thrilled to have grown the number of Middle Eastern galleries participating in Design Days Dubai; including six from Dubai, three from Lebanon, and one from Jordan, as well as one university from Qatar and participation from Algeria.”
DC: What new can we expect from DDD 2014?
CZ: For the 2014 fair, we are introducing a new annual element of Design Days Dubai, the ‘Discover’ section; the first edition will be presented in cooperation with Institut Français in the UAE, and will be dedicated to giving four young and fresh design galleries from France an international platform to exhibit works, (Ymer&Malta; Galerie Gosserez; Next Level Galerie and Galerie S. Bensimon). This year’s fair will also have a new selection of innovative installations to captivate our visitors; ranging from those based on organic forms, through to the use of movement with technological equipment – definitely something to watch out for in March!
DC: Any galleries, designers or works that you are particularly looking forward to?
CZ: The French presence this year will demonstrate how vibrant creation is in the country. I am also looking forward to the displays of our first-time exhibitors, and as usual I’m great fan of the design brought from Korea, by _Croft.
